The first generation of computers started in 1937.
The first digital computer was built by Dr. John V. Atanasoff and Clifford Berry. Atanasoff was a professor of Mathematics and Physics, and in the the 1920s and 30s and there was discoveries and new theories for the scientific disciplines, but especially for the physics discipline. Clifford Berry was Atanasoff's graduate student. This computer was known as Atanasoff-Berry Computer also called 'ABC'. In 1943 another computer was established. This computer was made for the military, Colossus.Colossus used state-of-the-art vacuum tubes. Colossus was able to read up to 5000 characters per second. In June 1944 was developed an improved version of Colossus Mark I, called Mark II, and eight more machines were built to handle the increase in messages. Other computers starting developing also. Such as the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer also known as 'ENIAC'. It was created in 1946. The Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer was the first general purpose digital computer. Computers on this time couldn't perform more then one task, and they had no operating system. The Electronic Numerical was the first programmable general-purpose electronic digital computer built during WWII by the United States. The invention was created by John Mauchly, J.Presper Eckert Jr. , and their colleagues at the Moore School of Electrical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. They strived for an an all-electronic computer. It was huge. It had also to 18,000 vacuum tubes, 70,000 resistors, 10,000 capacitors, 6,000 switches, and 1,500 relays. It costed the government $400,000.
The first generation ended in 1946
